Ok Bear, the third full-length solo album from Jeremy Enigk (of Sunny Day Real Estate, The Fire Theft), offers a surprising sense of intimacy while staying undeniably Enigk.

In the nineties, Jeremy Enigk's on-again off-again relationship with Sunny Day Real Estate (and the short lived The Fire Theft) cast him as a sort of enigmatic emo-rock icon. Overused genre classifications and debatable perceptions aside, there's a depth to Enigk's work that confirms his undeniable musical contribution. 96's Return of the Frog Queen stands as a standard of grandiose chamber pop. So it's no surprise that World Waits, a mere two years old, is already becoming an intelligent pop music classic in its ghostly transcendence. The simple fact that Enigk's solo work has kept the rapt attention of diehard fans in an over-saturated media wasteland with a mere two releases over the course of an entire decade is a testament to the depth of Enigk's craft. Now he's back to round out his releases with the playfully titled Ok Bear, the minimalist rock combo answer to his dramatic orchestral discography.

Big fan of Enigk's since the first Sunny Day album. I have loved everything this amazing songwriter has done and this album is no exception. I will keep this review short and simople by saying these two things. First if your a fan of the Enigk sound you won't be dissapointed. The only (and if you want to call this statement negative), thing I have to say is that all the press releases regarding this album keep pounding in the fact that it's his return to a more hard rocking minimal rock band sound. On the contrary, I find this album with the exception of the song, "life's too short" to be a pretty mellow album. If this album had tons of lush orchestration and a tad less (mostly clean) electric guitar it could easily sound lke the last two solo releases. So if your expecting a return to Diary or Rising tide distortion heavy guitars you'll have to wait for thepossible rumoured sunny day reuinion. But other than that this record is amazing! 5 stars from me. Mike.
