Old Moon in the Arms of the New (CD)
A collage of songs that establishes Ben Barnett as a songwriter auteur, able to slither in and out of genres and manipulate their devices leaving a mark of brilliance. Influences run the gamut from the opener which devolves into a Johnathan Fire Eater farfisa groove, juxtaposed against the breezy pop gem "Boy Cries Wolf" recalling Belle and Sebastian. Other songs nod to the haunting locution of Smog, The deadpan beauty of the Red House Painters, the earnestness of Johnathan Richmond, and the dynamics of a mid-tempo Braid.

| I am a huge KOLS fan and have heard almost every song they have ever put out, and I think this is their best album yet. I find myself continuously getting this record back out and listening to it. If you have never heard KOLS before you should definitely buy this. It's the perfect mix of depressingly sad to catchy and poppy songs (well as undepressing as KOLS can be...they write some really sad songs). If you call yourself an "emo kid" then this is for you...hehe. The LP is on stellar yellow vinyl and has an extra track...i recommend picking that up in the annex. | |

| I rated this album with 4-stars.. In all actuality it is leaning towards 4 from 3.
I bought this album thinking it was the new release.. well, it is new, but it's not "the new one". This just shows how much I'm keeping track. Anyway, I think this is an awsome album. You can tell that it must be a compilation of older songs because the lyrics arent as developed yet, but as far as the music in general goes, I highly recommend you buy this. | |
