Arctic Monkeys - AM

Arctic Monkeys - AM

I feel like a bit of a poser writing a blog about Arctic Monkeys. After all, it was on this very forum where I derivatively stated “Arctic Monkeys - - what is this 2007? No one cares.” But bygones, bygones… The important thing is – I’ve since realized how good Alex Turner is at what he does. I don’t like throwing around “lyrical genius” mostly because it inspires eye-rolls, but he’s really earned the title. Outside of Jarvis Cocker & Pulp, I haven’t found lyrics that so perfectly capture the early-mid 20s, urban, ‘lifestyle’ better than an Arctic Monkeys record. I think the problem with my earlier oversight was that I never took the time to really listen? “Dancing Shoes” and “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor” [from their debut] got a lot of airplay back in 2006 – and I just chocked them up to being another British band that had a couple of fun songs. MY BAD – but Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, The Kooks – there was a lot of similar stuff going on, and I think 2006 happened to be the year I first discovered drinking games, so any sort of intelligent music assessment was just going to have to wait.

In any case, if you don’t want to be a killjoy and brood with me and Alex Turner over your past failed romantic trysts – it’s all good, AM still has a good amount of ‘this sounds fun / I don’t care what he’s saying’ tracks, particularly “One for the Road” and “Knee Socks”. Or there’s “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High” which oddly enough reminds me of an Eminem track for the first 10 seconds… But for the others, oh the others…

“(Do I wanna know?)
If this feeling flows both ways
(Sad to see you go)
Was sorta hoping that you'd stay
(Baby we both know)
That the nights were mainly made for saying things that you can't say tomorrow day”

- Do I Wanna Know?

“That's magic in a cheetah print coat Just a slip underneath it I hope
Asking if I can have one of those
Organic cigarettes that she smokes
Wraps her lips round the Mexican coke
Makes you wish that you were the bottle”

- Arabella
