Liars - WIXIW
Liars is one of those rare bands that manages to have a distinct sound, despite reinventing it with each new album. Said sound lies at the convergence of a handful of genres, each seeming a less apt descriptor the more you listen. Alternative, punk, electronic— in the end, why bother attempting to define it when you can simply spin the most excellent WIXIW and let its uncanny, detailed, and continually original arrangements sink in? “No. 1 Against the Rush” is far and away my favourite track on the album. Hushed and delicate at times, at others pulsing and erratic, the song is perhaps the most accessible entry point for listeners that are new to the album or the band.
A record that will reward you repeat listens, WIXIW will grow on you and with you. And it somehow fails to be your cup of tea, Liars’ diverse catalogue, from their excellent debut They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top to this year’s Mess, is sure to offer something to your liking.
