Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today
Warning: This record may take a few spins in order to really sink in, but once you “get it,” you won’t want it to leave your turntable! I swear, when it was first released back in 2010, I didn’t think it lived up to the hype that surrounded it; and boy, was I wrong. Before Today is nothing short of a quirky synth-pop hybrid masterpiece. The breezy laid-back vibe found throughout is a wonderful listen for the hot hazy summer days ahead. Don’t even try to make sense of it all. Just go with its overall feel. Don't think. You’ll be astonished at what reveals itself.
“Round and Round” is irresistibly groovy, (not in the seventies sense of the word), even if it is a bit of a throwback, it’s done in such a refreshingly original way-- that’s the genius of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti. Nuance and nostalgia combine on this particular album in such a way that’s truly beyond words. What makes Before Today stand out as compared with previous releases? To be honest, I can’t really explain. I just feel it. Anyway, there’s no sense in “trying too hard to be what you already are.” In this case, it’s something phenomenal. You need this record. If you once wrote it off, there’s no better time to revisit it.
