Monday's Stuff We Like
Animal Collective - Feels
For a freak-folk addict like me, choosing a favorite Animal Collective album is virtually impossible. What I can say is that the earliest stuff, while well worth repeated listening, can be a little off-putting at first in that the music seems somewhat skeletal. If you’ve had difficulty getting into it, start with Feels. This particular album was my gateway into loving the band; and for that reason it holds a special place in my heart. Feels is the point where Animal Collective started to embrace a form of music which was closer in structure to pop while still holding to their eccentric originality. The end result was an absolute masterpiece.
“Purple Bottle” was the first Animal collective song I’d ever heard. It was my WTF (this is awesome) moment. From then on, for the months that followed, I listened to everything I could get my hands on. I think it was around the time of Strawberry Jam’s release, so it was very easy to become obsessed. Beach Boys-like harmonies, oddball lyrics, and weird sound effects combined to leave me completely mesmerized. What’s the bottom line? Time spent listening to Animal Collective is indeed time well spent. It just might "Turn Into Something."
