This Will Destroy You - Live In Iceland
I knew I wanted to write about one of my favorite winter-time records for my next blog the second we got more than a centimeter of snow in NYC. I mulled it over with my morning coffee, and had a slight fit trying to decide whether to go with Balmorhea’s Rivers Arms or This Will Destroy You’s 2013 release, Live in Iceland – I know, I know, I face incredibly difficult decisions. Both of those records kind of caught me off-guard when I first listened, as they are both very chill/mellow/borderline boring (as can be typical of post-rock, c’mon, you know this is true), but both are so goddamn beautiful from start to end you just want to lock yourself in your room, and hide under the covers and pretend you’re in a world where there is literally nothing but you and these arrangements and the biggest concern you face is whether or not you can flip the record from your bed. I guess I took the easy way out, decision-wise, because we no longer have vinyl copies of Rivers Arms available. Live in Iceland includes eleven live versions of the band's material spanning across Young Mountain, their self-titled record, and Tunnel Blanket. All songs were recorded at Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland – which I can attest is a magical enough place for this music to have been performed. It’s actually pretty hard to believe these guys aren’t from some dark Nordic country, but instead Texas…and they’ve had music featured in Brad Pitt movies. But ignoring all that, just give this record a spin. Amongst the sugary Christmas music or uncomfortably religious tunes that pervade this time of year, it is a nice record to have in your collection.
