Big K.R.I.T. - Return of 4eva
I love mixtapes. They (they being the aliens who created us like in that new summer movie, Ted) say there is no such thing as a free lunch, but regarding mixtapes, they are wrong. I guess they are right though, because you cannot eat a mixtape, but I digress. Mixtapes are swell, because you can get them for free and hear an artist trying out new things or gearing up for a new release or using other people's tracks to make something new. It is all fun.
The one thing I do not like about mixtapes is their format. Sure, mp3s and other digital forms are great, but sometimes when I am hanging out with real salt-of-the-earth people, real Joe the Plumbers, I like to get down to brass tacks and say very relatable and interesting things like, "I wish I had this free music on vinyl!" That just gets the conversation rolling. People get talking. Talking bout people.
Every once in a while, I do get the satisfaction of a great mixtape being pressed. In anticipation of his major label debut, Big K.R.I.T.'s two excellent mixtapes were recently pressed. Sure they came out a long time ago, but that does not take away from their quality. Return of 4Eva especially is one of the highest quality hip-hop releases from last year. It is less of a mixtape and more of a nice gift Big K.R.I.T. gave the world. Give Big K.R.I.T. something back! Give him your money!
