Prince - Purple Rain
I had the honor of sitting in the audience at Carnegie Hall last night to see a tribute performance entitled “The Music of Prince” in which the Purple Paisley God’s songs were performed by an all-star variety of musicians/celebrities – D’Angelo, The Roots, Bilal, Talib Kweli, Elvis Costello, Bettye Lavette, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Sandra Bernhard, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph and Nina Persson – to name a few. The sheer joy of the performers and the audience throughout the entire 2.5 hour show was a testament to the straight up MAGIC of Prince and his music.
One of my favorite performances of the night was by a singer I wasn’t previously familiar with – Kat Edmonson. She took “The Beautiful Ones” from Purple Rain and stripped it down to its core. Compared to the original, it was quieter (and almost more compelling), making me look at the song I already loved in an entirely new way.
So, I’m not going to begin to try to think about how to “review” such a classic work as Purple Rain. I just want to remind you that you should own this. If you already own this, you should listen to it more. If you already listen to it a lot, you should explore more of Prince’s body of work. And if you already do that or have done that, you should keep on keeping on.
