Infectious debut Celebration from Alabama's Thomas Function is one of those albums that always hit the right spot.
It would be an understatement to say that I was excited to hear their sophomore offering In the Valley of Sickness. The album opens brilliantly with a false start. The lyrics are darker than their first record but the music is equally as charged and uplifting. The recording is clear and clean. Vibrant synths, southern sounding guitars and a rubbery bass are accompanied with distinctive lead vocals. This charismatic second release is still in the power pop vein, definitely for fans of Goodnight Loving or The Nerves.
In the Valley of Sickness has been stuck on repeat ever since my first listen. For those of you who made it out to the warehouse sale (thanks - it was great to see you there), I may have already sung its praises to you.
Although, I think the chant on the third track "Picking Scabs" says it best:
"Are you gonna buy a record or what?"
